For all the #1Ls starting law school, let's bust some myths! (a thread)
Myth: Class preparation is a priority!

Busted! Most of your grade comes down to the exam you take at the end of the semester. Most profs don't even give points for class participation, so all you are really doing is ensuring you aren't embarrassed.
Myth: You can't have any extra-curricular activities the first semester.

Busted! You need to network with 2/3Ls and join student orgs just to stay sane. Upper-level students know the ropes, and have all the best study aids and tips on how to deal with various profs.
Myth: If I get the wrong answer in class, everyone will think I'm stupid.

Busted! Everyone is just thrilled they are not the person on the hot seat.
Myth: You shouldn't use commercial outlines or other supplements, that's "cheating".

Busted! Profs often don't like you to use them because they want to demonstrate their socratic brilliance in class. Supplements are great at helping you figure out why you are reading cases.
Myth: The people who talk the most in class get the best grades.

Busted! Usually it is the people who never speak in class and never brag about all the stuff they know who end up getting all the A's.
Myth: I need to be in a study group to succeed!

Busted! Study groups are great for some folks, but they can quickly devolve into socializing or can even be detrimental to progress. If you want to study w others, make sure you are on the same page.
Myth: I have to brief every case!

Busted! You don't have to brief any (unless your prof requires it). Briefs are just to help you prepare for class, but they are not necessary to understand the material. Also, if you do, less is more!
Myth: If I just work hard, I can get all A's!

Busted! Depending on your school, the curve is usually pretty brutal. Only 1-2 people will get A's, and you have to accept that only 10% of people will be at top of class, cuz that is how numbers work.
Myth: If I get a C it means I don't know anything!

Busted! Most people will get C's. It means you knew what you needed to know, you just didn't hit the obscure stuff your prof loved to talk about or discuss irrelevant issues your prof loved to talk about.
