Songhwa and the importance of self-love — a thread
I think a question that has passed through the minds of many those who've watched HP is how Songhwa manages to stay calm and radiant despite her hectic schedule and other occurrences in her life. The answer is simple: self-love.
Throughout the episodes of HP, we get a glimpse into SH’s life. We see that she’s an active member of church. We find out that she loves going camping by herself. And in spite of staying in the hospital late into the night, she manages to wake up early the next day.
In her office, she brews herself a cup of coffee. Though a simple action, it speaks a lot that SH takes time for this rather than buying coffee from a cafe. It’s a treat for herself, respite before the hustle and bustle that’s sure to come.
This is simple enough to incorporate into her daily life. This is a small gesture of self love, something that nurtures her mind and spirit. A little act that shows commitment to herself and gives balance to her life.
[EP 10] While walking with the residents, Songhwa notices that there’s a full moon and says that they should make a wish. She then utters that she hopes that Seongyeong, one of the interns, won’t get hurt and will become a good surgeon.
The residents smile at her and she’s asked if she has a materialistic wish. SH wonders out loud if she should wish for a camping deck. Knowing this is a mere thought, Seokmin prods her, asking if there’s anything else she’d like for herself.
Her response: none. This goes to show how inherently selfless she is. She hopes for the well-being of others.
Songhwa also shows that it’s never a bad thing to make purchases for yourself. In her words, it’s a treat.
She buys herself a wood stove, which she can use for camping.
She buys herself a rack for logs. Ikjun asks her why, when she can just put the logs on the ground. With a slight shrug of her shoulders, she says that she simply bought it for herself. Doing so gave her happiness.
By spending time with herself and learning about herself, SH lives a balanced life. Her happiness comes from herself, resulting to an inner sense of peace.
SH knows that the love she has for herself is enough. With this, she has plenty of love to give. Her compassion for others is an extension of her compassion for herself. This is why she’s the rock of the lacking five, the one that steadily grounds the group.
To end this thread, I encourage everyone to practice self-love like SH does. We have our responsibilities, but we must not forget that we must live our lives for ourselves, too. Self-care shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a priority.
