why atsushi is (pretty much) a perfect mc [thread in response to That facebook group]
1. as someone who doesn’t understand abilities, atsushi is perfect in guiding the audience as to how the bungou stray dogs world works. the audience gets to learn along with him, making him perfect in teaching the audience about the world!
2. he’s vulnerable. he’s relatable. he teaches the audience that you can be strong despite your trauma, speaking of which-
3. his trauma is written well. its not brushed off, it’s repetitive. it represents what trauma is — it doesn’t go away, it stays with you and you think about it forever. invalidating atsushi because of his trauma is unfair and rude.
yes, the orphanage scene appears often, but+
that’s because atsushi thinks about it often. he cant escape from it, so why should we? this is a particularly good piece of writing, as good representation for trauma is needed everywhere, especially in mcs.
4. in respect to “dazai being a better protagonist:” dazai has already been looked at. he got a backstory in which he was the protagonist. of course he’s an interesting character, but a show centred around him would be far different to the bsd we all know and love. in a way,+
dazai’s intelligence would break the fun of the show. his mystery is what keeps him captivating - you can’t keep that up for three seasons. bsd is not a comedy.
5. this point is subjective, but having atsushi be the way he is has genuinely helped me improve myself as a person. despite his trauma, he wants to better the world — we can all learn from that
friendly reminder that all these characters are comfort characters for some people, and hating on them does affect people! please be mindful when discussing these things <3
