So, @Yenyewe, asked this question on Twitter "You've gone house hunting in Nairobi.What feature do you see and immediately say no to?"...good question..
When you are disabled like me,you look and wish for many things...it a struggle for realllll....
@CiruMuriuki

(Short thread)
I have always wanted to move out of home... freedom,privacy and ability to walk naked from the fridge to the living room...parents of disabled kids never get it... When you are disabled,they overparent, they overprotect and infantilise you
@CiruMuriuki
I started living alone in 2013 after uni...in Roysambu...first challenge,washrooms...
One of the things that your average disabled person looks for is that ka washroom where you sit...those one for skuoting.. Issa throw mannn....
@Yenyewe @CiruMuriuki
Second thing...hanging lines...
You just want somewhere you can hang your clothes without help of others... independent living they call it...
It means so much
This washrooms,a big nooo
Ward robs...
Guys,let me tell you,when your legs don't work well,you realise how useful your hands are for stability....you wish everything is within reach...you can't risk kanyangaing a stool to pick something...
Stairs maaan...big trouble...I once lived on a second floor...one day I missed dinner because I forgot to buy a match box...going down the shop and up again wasn't possible....literally trapped
A disabled friend died three weeks ago cos of covid...her dream was to move out of home but it never came to pass...she never found a house(she was using a wheelchair)...she always felt bad living at home yet she could afford her place (she was born 1987)...she was earning 100+
You never find a place you like đź’Ż...so you take whatever even if it's 70% as you wish...you will only be comfortable if you build your own house....how many people are able to build their own houses in this economy?
For disabled people in Nairobi, home is not "sweet home" for many....how many affordable houses do you know in Nairobi that have a lift? A ramp?
One of the legacies that president Kenyatta of @StateHouseKenya wants to leave behind is that of affordable housing...but of what importance is affordability without accessibility?
