Why I think the trans umbrella is detrimental. A thread.

The trans umbrella is actually 2 umbrellas under a big umbrella.
Umbrella 1: binary transgender men and women
Umbrella 2: non-binary trans folk
Umbrella 1: binary transgender men and women
Umbrella 2: non-binary trans folk
People under umbrella 1 almost always experience dysphoria. It is the driving force behind their desire to transition. It is a medically treatable situation. There lives are improved, and often saved by the medical transition process.
Umbrella 2 is where things get a little more complicated.
This is where gender becomes a fluid idea, a non-idea, or whatever it means to that individual person.

This doesnt mean umbrella 1 people are & #39;more valid& #39;...
This doesnt mean umbrella 2 folk are & #39;not real& #39;...
It means they are different. With differing needs, identities & routes to acceptance.

We have a different set of needs. An NBs desire to be fluid or without gender is different to a binary trans persons desire to just exist constantly as the opposite of how they were born.
And that doesnt benefit anyone.
You cant combine gender, and the genderless, and expect it to succeed as a movement.

The trans umbrella was introduced as an idea by campaigners who believe in the idea of safety in numbers. The idea that trans (defined as change) is what unites us. Something I wholeheartedly disagree with. I will explain why...
Number 1. Crossdressers are not trans in any sense of the word. Clothes do not equal gender. They equal expression and its clearly a choice. They are often males who get a thrill out of dressing but have no desire to be female. They have used "transness" to legitimise themselves.
I dont care if people crossdress. Do what makes you happy. However the reality is that with their inclusion - it is perceived that who we all are is a choice . Crossdressers & Fetishists can do their thing but piggybacking on "transness" is wrong and detrimental to everyone else.
Really, this is a more accurate depiction clearly showing the divide. Why& #39;s it such an awful idea to have a binary umbrella, and a NB umbrella? The reality is - the different groupings have different ideas, needs and wants. We have a different fight for acceptance from society.
I can clearly define and prove my identity, and most cis folk can get their head around it. My NB friends struggle because they are often unsure or unable to define themselves in a way that makes sense to the average Joe, & I empathise with that struggle.
There are a million interpretations of a NB I.D, & it differs from person to person in varying degrees. Binary identities arent like that. It may have taken ages, but they are clearly defined, interpreted & often accepted. I cant help but feel this is compromised in the confusion
I want us ALL to have acceptance and our identities respected.
But the current ethos and practice doesnt work. And that is proven by the increased trans hate crimes, suicides & mental health problems amongst trans people.

We deserve better. All of us do.
