I don& #39;t know which is worse: Scientists that, for pure ignorance, would never use a sample size calculation in any context, or scientists that absolutely insist you need a sample size calculation in every context.
It& #39;s really difficult to deal with either, because they aren& #39;t educated enough to have a productive conversation about how they might be wrong, meaning you have to start from scratch to convince them, which is basically impossible to do on a one to one basis.
Perhaps the latter is worse - when they act as gate-keepers and force the knowledgeable person, who didn& #39;t propose a sample size calculation for good reason, to respond to the gatekeepers ignorance by "performing" a meaningless calculation, which just perpetuates the problem.
The latter is also more infuriating, because their particular form of ignorance is righteously presented as evidence of them being rigorous...and you can& #39;t argue with righteous.
