I don't know which is worse: Scientists that, for pure ignorance, would never use a sample size calculation in any context, or scientists that absolutely insist you need a sample size calculation in every context.
It's really difficult to deal with either, because they aren't educated enough to have a productive conversation about how they might be wrong, meaning you have to start from scratch to convince them, which is basically impossible to do on a one to one basis.
Perhaps the latter is worse - when they act as gate-keepers and force the knowledgeable person, who didn't propose a sample size calculation for good reason, to respond to the gatekeepers ignorance by "performing" a meaningless calculation, which just perpetuates the problem.
The latter is also more infuriating, because their particular form of ignorance is righteously presented as evidence of them being rigorous...and you can't argue with righteous.
