For many years I taught in a school where the students didn’t move, the staff did. We changed things around a few years ago but these are some of the things I learned about nomad teaching that may help some people out as this year starts... (thread)

1. Keep a small folder for each class with seating plans, worksheets and spare paper in. (Keep these small and light, you need to keep carrying weight to a minimum)

2. Keep these folders back at base, organised and in a quick to grab filing system so you can get to them easily at any time...

3. Set up clear expectations for the beginning of lessons. If you want students lining up outside then make your rules crystal clear in lesson 1. It may take a while but eventually they will be ready as soon as they see you coming.
4. However, it is MUCH easier if they are allowed in the classroom before you arrive. Again, make expectations for this clear.
I recommend quiet, independent reading. Reward those that are reading when you walk in the door - eventually that will be everyone.

5. Use the time they are reading. Leave them to it and set up the lesson, log on to your computer, organise worksheets and get ready. Once you are good to go stop their reading and crack on.
6. Always leave the classroom in a decent state (even if you didn’t find it that way). Tidy up and wipe the board, the next teacher will appreciate the smoother start to their lesson.
7. Find a corner of each room where you can leave a box of things - particularly if you have English books/textbooks/exercise books. Tell others who teach in that room what you have done and ask them to keep an eye on that corner when they are in there so your things are safe.
8. Fill a box with stationery to lend (tricky this year I know). If you can have a few of these kept near each classroom you won’t need to carry the stationery box around everywhere.

9. Get a bigger pencil case (I used a make up bag). Double the amount of stationery you personally use, you will lose it everywhere all the time.
On this note, label everything - esp board pens and board rubbers.

10. Organise for students to do all homework, assessments, work that you will be taking in, on paper rather than in books. A set of 30 pieces of paper is MUCH lighter than 30 exercise books.
11. Tote bags - lots of them. Just in case.
12. Make friends with the person in the classroom next to you for every lesson. You never know when you might need to nip round the corner or to the loo (I’ve done this for two pregnancies) and they can keep an eye on a quietly working class for you.
13. Perfect the hot drink walk. Hold tea at arm’s length whenever you move - usually at speed - between classrooms; I have ruined too many winter coats with coffee down the front. Or get a decent travel mug. I would still use the hot drink hold just in case.
14. Last but not least. Get a regular massage. I haven’t taught like this for two years but I still get trouble with my right shoulder from carrying so much around in a bag on that shoulder.
Good Luck!
