It's a polygenic trait- influenced by more than one gene
Most definitions of intelligence include the ability to learn from experiences and adapt to changing environments. Elements of intelligence include the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, and understand complex ideas.
Research shows that more than 59% of intelligence is genetic.

Environmental factors such as:

How parents raised you
Culture
Circle of friends

Determines the remaining 40%
If you were raised in a poor home with terrible diet and zero appreciation for education, you are likely to be less intelligent than some one who had opposite.
One reason people may find discussing intelligence uncomfortable is the belief that it is something you are born with and so you can do nothing to influence it.

This undercuts social equality but doesn't eradicate the fact that intelligence is inherited to a degree.
Genetics gives a blue print , sets the limits but i think the environement actually develops where within those limits a person develops.
