Important moments that changed the course of Kanye’s career, a thread
"Yo Gee, they can't stop me from rappin', can they?"
The famous car crash that wired Kanye's jaw shut played a huge role in his debut as a rapper. Through The Wire was the first single off TCD. People began to see Ye as a rapper after seeing how committed he was to it.
The original track list for The College Dropout featured a bonus track, 18 Years. This track later became "Gold Digger" off Late Registration, the longest running #1 Kanye ever had. It gave Late Registration the momentum to solidify Kanye as more than a one great album artist.
Kanye released his single Stronger in the midst of the sales battle versus 50 Cent. The popularity of it built hype for the album, giving it the push it needed beat 50. Graduation's success, as well as beating one of the top rappers at the time solidified him as a superstar.
The death of Kanye's mom, Donda, alongside him ending his relationship with his ex-fiance put emotion at the forefront of his creative process. He went against the norm of the time and made an album dedicated to this emotion. Without it, Kanye wouldn't be as influential.
Plagued by the pain of his mother's death, Kanye has his famous VMA incident. The media painted him as an arrogant asshole, causing him to self exile and almost quit music. The world was against him, and he used that energy to make what many consider to be his best album, MBDTF.
Kanye was ready to dive into the world of fashion. He already had a deal with Nike for his Air Yeezy line, but that coupled with restrictions in the industry led him to believe nobody wanted to give him creative control. This inspired his most experimental album, Yeezus.
The infamous TMZ outburst led to a complete rework of his album. First planned to be titled Love Everyone, he scrapped the entire record in place of ye, which he made in just 3 weeks. This led to a record that has caused debate among fans on its quality compared to old records.
Sometime in 2019, Kanye was radically saved, renewing his faith. His long awaited 9th studio album, Yandhi, was cast aside in place of his first true gospel record, Jesus Is King. It's put Kanye's musical journey on a new path, one that we've yet to see the full impact of.
Without these events or choices, he may have an entirely different discography than he does now. Each of these played a huge role in making the album he did, or his status after releasing an album.
