why white people using their (asian) kins’ names is offensive: a thread from an east asian
asians have been ostracized relentlessly for having “asian-sounding names”. we’ve grown up in this western society, normalized with names like ashley or emma (no offense to anyone with these names). for most of us, we’ve been bullied our entire lives for having a “weird” or +
+ “hard to pronounce” name. so for you to go and use our names just for fun or because you just like it, is white privilege.
this goes beyond white anime stans too. you can’t just take our culture because it’s convenient and trendy to. this our life, our identity and you make us feel more diminished than we already do.
not to make this situation about me, but i was given a stereotypically white name by my parents (who’ve told me this to my face) because they feared any racist bullying in schools towards me. i have family with non-white sounding names, so for you to take our names just because +
+ this character you kin resonates with you, remember that this character has an asian background. this is why they have that name and why you’re legally a sarah.
before anyone starts arguing with me, i have a very “asian” middle name and was constantly made fun of in school for it. i know it barely scratches the surface for other asians who have an asian first name, but i know the pain and frustration as well as my family
