Yes there are times of immediate violence but the vast vast vast number of calls are not that. We can create countless off ramps from trending violence though time, silence, distance, silence (stop yelling at someone yelling) and did I mention time....

In police training and mindset (the heart of the matter) we’ve let the exception be the rule and that’s insane. Any person can in theory kill me so therefore they will. We cops talk about all the countless calls that don’t end in violence but we don’t learn from that truth...

The truth that most calls don’t end in violence because most people aren’t violent. And by decelerating (I say we must slow things down instead of trying to calm things down) we play to that truth.
