Because I'm raging about a flagship show on a big streaming platform trying to offer basically a bag of fruit snacks as pay for their SC and because not that many people actually know what Script Coordinators do. Here's a #PayUpHollywood THREAD about all the duties SCs have 1/??
SCs are most commonly known for proofing. That means they make sure that a character doesn't say some weird thing that everyone assumes is just a joke they don't get and later the editor is trying to cut it together. Yes, this is a thing that's happened. 2/?
SCs also read for comprehension If you've ever tried to proof for grammar WHILE reading for comprehension you understand why this is a hard job. That means that if the story makes zero sense because they completely forgot a scene you flag it. Yes, it happens. 3/?
SCs are also in charge of continuity. That means that if you read the car was blue in the first scene and yellow in A3, you tell production and prevent them from having to reshoot it or use VFX to fix it. Yes, that's happened. 4/?
SCs put in the days and nights so production knows what the lighting will be and how they should schedule their shoots. That means if an SC misses something that should be Day instead of Night and it gets shot, the production now has to reshoot it. Does it happen? You betcha. 5/?
SCs handle all the distribution of scripts. They are in charge of making sure production, actors, studio and network get the script when they're supposed to get the script. Has an SC not given the lead actress the script in time to learn their lines? Why of course! 6/?
SCs are in charge of adding production numbers to scripts as well. If the production numbers aren't done right it creates issues for several departments including the ADs, Script Supervisors and pretty much all of Post Production. But why not create more work for those ppl? 7/?
SCs handle important paperwork. It varies but in the least they're in charge of WGA paperwork that upholds the contracts between the studios and WGA. At most, they prepare legal documents for the writers/studio. But sure, have an intern do that, what could go wrong? 8/?
SCs regularly work at odd hours and put out scripts in the dead of night. Sometimes for productions that are in other countries or that urgently need the script to prep. As you can imagine, if you're not good at the job at 2pm you will not be better at 2am. 9/?
I know I'm missing things. Getting to be an SC is an honor. We're part of the writing process. It's sad to me that studios don't see us the same way. Many of us have put out scripts from weddings and funerals bc its that important. We deserve a living wage. 10/10
