On Aug. 11, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day.

No. 8 for 10 seasons. No. 24 for 10 seasons.

A 5x champ. 2× NBA Finals MVP. 18× NBA All-Star.

An NBA icon who was also building a business empire you didn't know about.
Long before Kobe Bryant stepped away from the NBA arena, he entered the entrepreneur arena.

Kobe Bryant retired from the NBA on April 13, 2016.

Kobe Bryant co-founded venture capital form “Bryant Stibel” in 2013.
He recognized that athletes and entrepreneurs shared similar work ethics, habits, and dedication.

That was the beginning of Kobe Bryants entrepreneurial journey...
Post-retirement, Kobe Bryant, stated, “The most important thing I enjoy now is helping others be successful. I enjoy that much much more, that’s something that lasts forever, and hope they do that for the next generation.”
Bryant started diversifying his career in 2013 when he co-founded a $100 million venture capital firm “Bryant Stibel”

Bryant Stibel reserved their funding for technology, media, and data startups.
Bryant Stibel claims 10 successful exits, including LegalZoom, Dell, and Alibaba.

They also have investments in Epic Games, Klarna, and The Honest Company.
When referring to Bryant Stibel, Kobe said, “Yes, it’s important to see those returns, right? But it’s also important to have a great opportunity, great relationships with our investors, great opportunities with our entrepreneurs to help them grow..."
Bryant Stibel called Kobe “more than a founding partner” and a “creative visionary who quickly became an accomplished entrepreneur and investor.”

Bryant Stibel now has over $2 billion in assets.

Their investments include dozens of tech, media, and data companies.
In 2014, Kobe invested $6 million into Body Armor for about 10% equity.

On Aug. 14, 2018, Coca-Cola purchased a minority share in the company.

Kobe Bryant’s $6 million investment in BodyArmor is now worth about $200 million.
In 2016, Bryant founded Granity Studios.

“Granity” is a word Bryant created from the combination of the phrase “greater than infinity.”

Granity Studios focuses on creative storytelling around sports.
Through Granity Studios, Kobe wrote and narrated a short film called “Dear Basketball”

“Dear Basketball” won the Academy Award for best animated short film in 2018.

Dear Basketball was a poem written by Kobe, leading up to the announcement of his retirement.
Granity Studios is also responsible for many publications.

Not only is Kobe Bryant a 5x champion but also a 5x New York Times Best Seller.

“The Mamba Mentality: How I Play” was published on October 23, 2018.

The autobiography quickly became a top-seller.
Alongside Granity Studios, Kobe also published a series of middle grade and young adult novels.

These novels merge education and inspiration to help develop the youth.
The first series of books is called “The Wizenard Series”.

The series was heavily influenced by Kobe’s love for the Harry Potter series.
Granity Studios states, “We partner with award-winning writers, producers and illustrators to awaken the imagination of young athletes and foster emotional and mental development that allows them to reach their full potential.”
When Kobe spoke to ESPN in 2017, he said, “I got tired of telling people I loved business as much as I did basketball because people would look at me like I had three heads.”

He lived it.

He loved it.

He proved it.
The business world also spoke very highly of Kobe.

“Not sure I will ever know anyone else with his work ethic.” - Chris Sacca (Venture Capitalist)

“He still believed he had work to do.” - Alexis Ohanian (Reddit co-founder)
A few life lessons I learned from Kobe:

1. Be Relentless - Whatever you want, work your a** off for it. Don’t ever give up and fight through the pain.

2. Inspire - It’s important to inspire people to see the greatness within themselves.
3. Be Curious - Passion starts with curiosity.

4. Don’t Fear Failure - Failure is temporary If you’re determined to succeed.

Kobe believed, “The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great at whatever they want to do."
