Honestly, I don’t know. But I’ve always suspected the “adrenochrome” narrative as a red herring of sorts:

Some of you are missing the point I was trying to make. I know they torture, rape, sacrifice and cannibalize.

The debate is WHY: I think “adrenochrome” may be subterfuge to simplify the WHY as “just for a drug.”

I think there’s a deeper, darker reason they do these evil things

This is where I lean too: for energy/power

More specifically: energy/power gifted to them by “the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” in exchange for [their] unspeakable acts.
