"I’ve had my head tilted up to the stars for as long as I can remember. You know what surprised me the most? It wasn’t meeting them. It was meeting you."
"I was thinking Abbott and Costello."
An entire sci-fi movie about language and communication, and in real life it is already so difficult to communicate in 280 characters. XD

Me on the Internet:
"Here's a tweet about this movie/ship, it took me times to research it, enjoy!"

Everybody: "I hate this movie/ship!"

Me:

XD
Outside of my rant for the Enterprise E, this is a really great sci-fi movie. And without a doubt one of my favorites of the last few years. Simple, clear, strong. A beautiful message and a beautiful ending. And a nice, thoughtful way to show this first contact (still waiting).
And the ship! Just like the aliens in this movie, it's really an ... alien ship. The form, like the technology, seems unreal, magical to us.

As we know, "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" (Clarke).
Of course, they tried many designs.

Until you reach the right idea.
Ending note: The end was impacted by Interstellar (2014).

Writer @HIGHzurrer : "In earlier versions they were leaving sort of the blueprints to an interstellar ship, like an ark of sorts. And then Chris Nolan’s Interstellar came out and..."
"...and all of us got together and said, ‘Well this doesn’t quite work now’ (laughs). So we focused more on what we had there in front of us, which was the power of their language."

I love ark ships but the ending is better as it is. ;) https://collider.com/eric-heisserer-arrival-interview/
I love this anecdote about Villeneuve.

Writer Eric Heisserer:
Arrival production designer Patrice Vermette: "Meetings between mankind and an alien civilization from outer space have been portrayed in numerous films throughout the years—some more inspiring than others—so we all have preconceived idea of what an alien ship should look like."
"We wanted to take a different route and explore various shapes. After all, we are talking about a world that is supposed to be alien to us. Theoretically, there is a good chance that we only have very little in common with their species."
"The spark of the idea for the shape of the ship came from Denis. He had come across a photograph of a strange exoplanet outside the solar system, an oval planet. So this set the ground for the exterior appearance of the spacecraft. It would have to be alien to our civilization."
"We played a bit with the oval shape, slimmed it a little, made one side concave. The dark charcoal color is made to look like a somewhat polished stonelike surface."

Art by @MeinertH :
"We wanted to create a contrast between the peacefulness felt inside the dark interview chamber of the ship and the chaos felt inside the white military tents. There had to be a soothing James Turrell–like atmosphere felt within the chamber."

2&3/art by @peterkonig and @MeinertH
“I realized that since 2001, a lot of the ship designs in movies was very similar. Some examples were totally different – Tron, Dune, Under the Skin. It showed us that it was so out there that we were allowed to be different.”

4 years later, Patrice is prod designer on Dune <3
“My wife (Martine Bertrand) had [created] 15 different logograms. I said – ‘this is it!’ I went to meet with Denis, [but] I didn’t want it to sound like I’m hiring my wife. ‘In two weeks, I’ll tell you who made them if you like them.’”

"For my part, I really like working with symbolism to convey a feeling, an idea, through places. And I confess to you that there is nothing free in the shots that we design, it is really not just aesthetics".

"I had seen visual artist James Turrell's show in Los Angeles, and Denis had seen it in New York. Long before Arrival. And when we talked about this show, we both thought that if we ever made a science fiction film, we would have to take inspiration from it!"
