It's a miserable Monday night, so that can only mean one thing - it's time to kick back and look at the

Mogwai are one of the best bands to ever come out of this wonderful little country, so let's get loud!

Join me!

The final track on Mogwai Young Team is one of the band's most striking compositions, rolling through a gamut of emotions across its 16-minute run time. The unexpected arrival of the flute is a rare treat!

Mr Beast was the band's most abrasive album but its opener, with its textured piano and skittering electronics, was one of the very best. Auto Rock brims with tension but never reaches its boil; it is all the better for it.

One of the most curious tracks in Mogwai's canon, this sounds like a nightmarish, doom-laden folk song. Gruyff Rhys' vocals - sung in Welsh! - and dizzy strings really give this its unreal quality.

Mogwai were perhaps initially best known for their quiet-loud dynamics but when they underplayed it, they could be untouchable. This track, glistening in low feedback, sounds like it glows. Truly uplifting!

Mexican Grand Prix is a goddamn banger. Pumping along to a muscular bass and propulsive drums, it reminds me of an out-of-control monster truck. Great video too - a real snapshot of the world's best city!

Remurdered is a nasty song, twitchy, tense and malevolent, but the moment at the midpoint when the synthesiser starts going haywire and the distortion begins to rumble, it takes off and heads into the stratosphere.

Cody is the sound of coming face to face with a tremendous epiphany on a long walk home from the pub. Gorgeous, lovely, warm, woozy, sad, wonderful; one of Mogwai's very best.

A masterpiece in creating and building tension. A bass guitar loops over and over and over as feedback and distortion slowly circle overhead until it all becomes too much and everything topples in on itself. An awesome song.

This could well be one of the most defining songs this country has ever produced. Helicon 1 gently rises until a huge, melodic meteor suddenly crashes right through the middle of it. Simply enormous.

The opening monologue says it better than I ever could: "If the stars had a sound, it would sound like this". This is astonishing, especially the build towards the crescendo. Amazing!
