Thiago Silva thread:
Chelsea are set to complete the signing of Thiago Silva on a free transfer for the next two seasons, so let’s take a look at what the experienced Brazilian centre back brings to Stamford Bridge both on and off the field.
Silva is a very well rounded and complete defender. Despite being 35 years of age, Silva is still performing at a world class level, as his numbers from the past season would suggest.
Playing in a possession based PSG system, Silva averaged 71.2 passes per game with a 95.5% success rate in 21 Ligue 1 appearances. In comparison, Van Dijk averaged 86.8 passes with 89% success, further highlighting the level Silva is still performing at.
The fact Silva is experienced playing in a possession based system is a further positive for Chelsea due to Lampard’s willingness to play possession based football with defenders who can play out from the back.
Aerially, Silva averaged 2.55 aerial duels per game, winning 1.49 of those, equating to approximately 58.43%. Silva has also shown an ability to attack set pieces successfully, scoring 21 goals since 2010.
From a defensive standpoint, Silva averaged 1.3 tackles per game, 3.04 clearances, 0.76 blocks per game & 1.26 intercepts while only committing 0.4 fouls.
If we were once again to compare with Van Dijk who’s stats were: 0.7 tackles, 4.2 clearances, 0.3 blocks & 1.1 intercepts while committing 0.4 fouls, the numbers once again highlight the level Silva is still playing at.
Statistics aside, one of Silva’s biggest assets is his ability to command the box and defend against crosses and set pieces, something which will be invaluable to Chelsea given their struggles against set pieces.
Additionally, his leadership on and off the pitch will be undeniably important for Chelsea as they have a very young squad. Silva’s experience and leadership will be critical in mentoring those younger players and nurturing Chelsea’s young centre backs.
Overall, this is a fantastic signing for Chelsea. Silva will be Chelsea’s best centre back upon signing and one of the best in the league as well. A huge boost for Chelsea’s unusually shaky defence with Silva set too boost the side both on and off the pitch.
