Hello! This is @Tsolayemi07 & I'll be taking over Sayfty’s Twitter to talk about the effects of gender-based violence #GBV on the mental health of women survivors.

When it comes to #GBV, more often than not, a lot of attention is paid to the physical effects on the survivor. However, asides from the physical effects,  survivors may also face serious psychological, mental & emotional harm as a result of their experiences.

In a blog post on @censoj, the author stated that #GBV has a prolonged impact on the mental health of survivors who are at an increased risk of depression, anxiety & post-traumatic stress disorder. There is also a stronger link between #GBV & mental health issues in women.

The author also stated that women who experienced physical violence have a significantly higher incidence of major depression, substance abuse, & are suicidal.

Unfortunately, women of colour have less access to mental health services in places such as USA. In an article on Sayfty’s blog, Amy Oloo alludes this to
- less access to financial resources for quality mental health services

- conditioning that views violence as normal.

How then can we as feminists bring the mental health effects of violence on women survivors to the forefront of #GBV conversations?
