Some days are harder than others. Today is one of them.

Four years ago we received the call from the coroner telling us they'd conclusively determined Jude's cause of death: influenza B.

There's no good way to lose someone you love, but learning that Jude's death was preventable was a punch in the gut. He'd failed to develop immunity from his flu shot, but better prevention in our communities could have stopped the flu from reaching him and protected him. 2/11
After a lot of hard conversations and important lessons from experts, we got to work, founding a flu prevention campaign with the hope of protecting others from being in our shoes. We can't have Jude back, but what if we could help someone else keep their loved one? 3/11
Canada, look what you've done! We've seen the conversation about flu prevention grow through these 4 years and see how many more of you now get a #flushot.

2015-16: 34.3%
2018-19: 41.8%

You're saving lives and we're proud of our tiny part in this conversation. Thank you. 4/11
There's more work to do. Too many Canadians die every year from the flu, and this year our challenges are bigger and more complicated than ever. This fall we'll be approaching flu season while we live with #COVID19, and we don't really know yet what it'll look like. 5/11
I do know this.

Losing someone you love is devastating. Knowing it was preventable is harder to live with than I know how to describe. What this fall looks like depends on the measures we all take to protect ourselves and each other. This rests with us. 6/11
Every choice we make right now will either increase or decrease the risk to ourselves and our communities. The people we spend time with, how we get to work, and the plan for our kids to return to school. Everything is a factor in how #COVID19 will affect us in coming months.7/11
I'm frustrated by lack of precaution in #backtoschool plans. I see a failure to prioritize the health and lives of kids, ed workers, families, and communities, in favour of saving money in the short-term. I worry about families who may end up like mine. They don't have to. 8/11
We're dependent on our govts to deliver safe plans and we must continue reaching out to them to ask for better. A failure to give us a #SafeSeptember will affect us all. And it's up to each of us to do our part so we aren't the reason someone loses their life or loved one. 9/11
Today I feel the weight of loss that could have been prevented, the worry of more to come.

And I'm asking you to keep doing everything you can to stay well and keep your community safe. You can save someone's life. That's everything. Let's do it together. #forjudeforeveryone 10
And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousands times again
For you
