UMN fertilizer guidelines: designed to help a crop maximize yield. If you have another (cover) crop out there, you may short your cash crop. -Dan Kaiser
If fertilizer is only applied every 1 or 2 years, when's the best time for fertilizer applications relative to cover crops? Depends on your CC goals: for forage productivity, apply fertilizer beforehand. But there may be a delay in release as CC decomposes.

Within a month, 80% of cover crop N was released. But, it's not necessarily plant-available nitrate.
