This table within the NYT interactive on pandemic excess mortality worldwide gives me more confidence to report something I've been suspecting for awhile: Mexico probably has the world's highest number of excess deaths not officially attributed to confirmed cases of COVID-19.
The table shows that just one city in Mexico (the country's largest) ranks 4th worldwide in excess mortality beyond that of already confirmed cases of COVID. In overall mortality, Mexico City is tied with Ecuador, location of former hotspot Guayaquil. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/21/world/coronavirus-missing-deaths.html
Why is Mexico City on the table and not Mexico the nation? Because the capital has open records and the country does not. The city has also released its own study, corroborating the work of independent researchers like @mariorz and Laurianne Despeghel published in @nexosmexico.
But the federation did publish an incomplete study last month. It covered a time span from mid April to late June and included 20 of 32 states. While not a complete picture, it did give a glimpse at trends during that time and provide a concrete, verified number of excess deaths.
Details of Mexico's federal excess mortality report in thread linked below. Officials have not updated public info since then to include data from the 12 missing states or examine what happened in July, the deadliest month yet for confirmed cases of COVID. https://twitter.com/SYoungReports/status/1289621658924244992
Using the (incomplete, and now outdated) federal report, data scientists have developed a few estimates as to what excess mortality in Mexico is at a minimum and what it may be by basically multiplying govt-acknowledged deaths by 3. (Chart via @mariorz)
To compare to the NYT chart at the top of this thread, excess mortality in the US beyond confirmed COVID is 58,060 as of Aug 1. MX fed data shows that by late June, excess mortality beyond lab-confirmed COVID was 48,948. What it is for all 32 states thru Aug 1 is not public info.
