I'm at #CUBoulder for the first day of classes in this weird semester. But it looks and feels nothing like a typical first day of college in #Boulder
Move-in, aside from the masks, actually felt pretty normal. But the vibe today on campus can only be described as eerie. Freshman Jayden, who had Norlin Quad almost to herself: "This is definitely not what I pictured."
Somebody tell my boss it might take me a while to navigate my way out of the UMC. Send a search party if I'm not back in 2 days
One thing, social distancing at #CUBoulder means finding study space feels "intimidating," junior Emily said. "But I found this tree, so I'm happy. I will fight you for this tree."
I asked #CUBoulder freshman Max why he was studying on a folding chair under a circus tent in the middle of a parking lot on a 90-degree day. Said even though he has a dorm nearby, due to the hybrid nature of classes he wanted to make sure he separated study and down time
Overall, almost every student I saw had a mask on. Some had them down when they were studying by themselves out in the open, but would put them back up when walking or when others came near. But there were a handful I saw who were walking on paths with no mask at all
Another thing: Due to the masks and the distancing, there was almost no chatter. No study groups, no groups eating together. Junior Jeff said it felt like everybody just put their masks and earbuds on, put their heads down and went about their business.
But while campus environment might not be the same, students I talked to so far said they had positive experiences with in-person classes, even if it was a little weird.

"Everyone seemed positive," freshman Jayden said.
