19/20 Thoughts/Opinions #2

Chelsea Thread

Key Points:
🔸Impact of new signings on system/shape
🔸Rotation risk of attacking options
🔸Role of youngsters seemingly pushed out by new signings: Abraham, CHO, RLC, Mount
🔸Reece James 🤷

New Signings (1/3)

Lampard has primarily switched between 4231 and 343. The addition of Werner, Ziyech and Havertz suggests a long term commitment to 4231 or similar to allow 4 attackers to be fielded - likely Havertz central and Pulisic/Ziyech either side of Werner.
New Signings (2/3)

Yet few 4231s play with 4 genuine attackers - either the AM helps out in midfield (Mount) or the wingers have increased defensive responsibilities (Willian).

Ziyech can play a disciplined role but Pulisic and Havertz are accustomed to more freedom.
New Signings (3/3)

For a team that already struggles defensively this will require some balancing. Thus far Lampard's approach to fixing his defence was to switch to 343. If he opts to do this again he'll be forced to leave out some big names from his forward line.
Rotation Risk (1/2)

Werner's signing is particularly good as his ability to play wide allows you to rotate in backups (Abraham, Giroud) without changing shape or dropping your first choice goalscorer (aka: the Kane Dilemma).
Rotation Risk (2/2)

Chelsea have plenty of versatility across the front 3-4, so you have to expect plenty of rotation and substitutions.

Good news for squad harmony/fitness; bad news for PB consistency
Youngsters

CHO, RLC, Mount and Abraham have all been emerging FI prospects in recent years, but all four appear to now face a challenge for regular minutes. Although their potential hasn't changed, their path to regular PB seems murky for the foreseeable future. I hope I'm wrong
Reece James

Can anyone explain to me what is good about Reece James? I admit to not getting it. From what I've seen (5-10 games, not loads) he is fast, can't defend and has minimal attacking output.

Genuinely baffled by the hype - explanations welcome. What have I missed?
