Canadian media insists on using the euphemism "social conservative" to describe what&
#39;s mostly a phenomenon of conservative Christians—particularly evangelicals and Catholics—in this country. Given they remain a powerful force in our politics, they should be understood accurately.
People aren&
#39;t "social conservatives" because they&
#39;ve arbitrarily decided "social issues" matter. Such opinions tend to come from a place of firm spiritual conviction. Our press cannot continue its squeamishness about religion given conservative Christians remain a powerful force.
In 2016, US media was humbled by Trump&
#39;s win, which prompted a lot of genuine introspection about what they got wrong, and increased curiosity about Trump voters. Given how close Lewis came, will our press show comparable interest in Canada&
#39;s world of conservative Christians?
