So, you are concerned about the environment? Put down your tofu and dig into a steak from a regenerative farm.
Tofu is made from soy, which is one of the three common crops grown using Monocropping techniques. Monocropping involves growing a single crop year after year on the same land.
Monocropping is not natural in nature and has several negative consequences including the depletion of soil nutrients, a reduction in soil organic matter, water run off, a reliance on synthetic and harmful chemicals, and soil erosion.
Plants in healthy soil sequester CO2 from the atmosphere & place it into a more stable form in the soil. How? Plants use CO2 & sunlight to make energy (sugars, which contain carbon molecules).
In healthy soil, plants have a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi (MF) in the soil & send MF sugar in exchange for a wide array of nutrients from the soil. Humification then transforms the simple carbon molecules into more stable forms deep in the soil.
Since monocropping (or simple corn/soy rotation) operations often have very poor soil (it’s more like dirt), these systems commonly operate at a net carbon positive - meaning the soil releases more carbon than it sequesters.
The plants in monocropping systems get a limited set of nutrients from the synthetic fertilizers, so they no longer need MFs and do not exude carbon down to them! Plants are lazy and are not going to put in extra work when they are sprayed with free nutrients!
Regen ag can operate at net carbon negative since this symbiotic plant & MF relationship thrives. Plus, cow poop is a natural fertilizer & cow bites = plant hormesis, leading to an increase in photosynthesis & carbon sequestration for more nutrients from MFs to heal their wounds.
