I disagree with the notion that in response to shocking levels of depression among teachers and shocking levels of anxiety among kids, the answer is about access to mental health services and helping teachers with their classroom management skills.
This rationale is about blaming the victim and avoiding the structural causes of depression and anxiety. It is about changing people and trying everything, except changing school.
Guess what...

Children need to move. Children need to play. Children need to speak in order to learn. Children need to go the bathroom when their bodies tell them they need to do it.
Sometimes children need to take a nap in the middle of the day. Sometimes they need to be alone and find a quiet space away from their classmates.
Sometimes children need to spend all day playing the same game or focusing in only one activity, and their learning needs should not have to care about the schedules of school.
The minds, bodies, interests and learning needs of children are diverse. And as it happens with adults, they will not always be interested in what you have to say or what you have to teach, and that& #39;s okay.
And yes, it is very difficult, frustrating and hard for teachers not to take it personally if they spend a lot of time preparing and if they have been conditioned to take the behavior of students as a reflection of their performance or value as teachers.
Obviously, it can also be very stressing for teachers to be observed and evaluated according to their ability to control the minds and bodies of children. And this is far from trivial when their job security and ability to support their families are at stake.
The prevalence of abusive and violent incidents in the treatment of children should be evidence of just how dangerous it is to place them in an environment in which the job security of adults is made to depend on their ability to control them.
And there is never an excuse to mistreat a child and teachers who mistreat children should be fired, but educational systems failing to address the structural causes of depression, anxiety, violence and abuse at schools should not be left off the hook.
Ultimately, it should be clear that the traditional model of school learning is not healthy for both teachers and children. And if the well-being of children were prioritized, schools would have to change.
