Big week for me: my last one "at" the Citz. I left the building for mat leave in July 2018 and had a short stint at our temporary offices before *all this*. I've been on furlough since March, and it's sucked. I've got some general, non-organisation specific thoughts on why:
Lots of arts admins are "do-ers". We're used to sorting out weird problems we've little training for, and are outside our job description. To sit and do nothing is antithetical and cognitively exhausting as we hypothetically problem-solve with no outlet.
While furlough payments have removed a massive source of stress from those of us fortunate enough to benefit from them, if we were in the job for the money, we wouldn't be in the job. Suspending our roles removes a massive sense of self and purpose.
It's grossly unfair that financial support is not finding its way to those that make our organisations: the artists and makers. It's massively guilt-inducing to be benefiting from payments, while not actively working to improve the landscape for others.
Lots are still on furlough, with little idea about what the medium and long term future holds. Lots are just un- or under-employed. It really does suck, and I feel you.
