what’s happening in italy rn : a thread

tw // slavery, death, human trafficking, mafia
italy has been a place of immigration since the 1970s but it’s been 2 decades since immigration has become consistent and for many people, a problem. migrants come mainly from north africa and arrive in south italy through dirty boats. migrants havent stopped coming during the
pandemic, and the boats are full of people, so catching coronavirus or other viruses is very easy. a lot of people, in fact, die bc of these viruses, a lot of them die in the sea for different reasons, while they still haven't arrived. the ones that arrive might be sent back, or
if they are able to start a life in italy, many of them get used by the mafia to do very dirty jobs, or they have to work 12 hours a day, with none or little salary, and do back wrecking jobs. underneath here are some articles of modern slavery in italy, please read them as
they're not very long but explain the situation well.
while ur here, if u read the articles u know now how horrible mafia is, and how joking about it is (example: tiktoks that say what ur gonna wear when u marry a mafia boss) actually not funny for a lot of people that have lost their loved ones for mafia wars. if u saw the movie
365 days, ur vision about mafia might be a bit clogged. mafia is not something to romanticize, please keep that in mind.
going back to the migrants topic, the government of italy is pretty much pro-migrants, but italy is still divided into regions, and many presidents of the southern regions are against immigration. a few days ago, the president of sicily, nello musumeci, ordered every migrant of
sicily to go away. fortunately, a bigger organization, called the viminale, said he can't make these kinds of decisions. i said this to realize how much certain politicians want migrants away from italy. hundreds of people arrive here every day.
