The opinions around the Covid-19 on Twitter are crazy. This is the danger of politicizing the epidemic. It didn't just start since elections. It started when we started to insist that the borders must be open. That Jamaicans abroad absolutely had to come back home.
It started when some Jamaicans decided that we were trampling on the rights of some Jamaicans when we kept our borders close. The decision wasn't one being courted in the best interest of those Jamaicans it was being done to score political points.
I remember party promoters and other entertainment actors protesting in Emancipation Park allow us to have parties or else we won't vote at election time.
The call to remove curfews from our business sector. I realize we were doing too many things at once. Returning to a 'normal' that was no longer there.
Nomination Day was completely unnecessary. That was all because unruly politicians have no creativity and no imagination. You don't have to campaign with all the drama. What about door to door and small meetings of twenty people or less? Phone calls and virtual meetings?
My advice to Jamaicans is to drop the partisanship from our conversations. And yes we must all take responsibility for where the virus is. Those of us who deny this have not been seeing how Jamaicans all wanted their group to be excluded from the restrictions.
Churches, church groups, those who buried their dead. Family members who returned from the states and went visiting and continued normal life. The craziness of us. Then we sit in judgment when the numbers gone up.
This is also a global reality. So many countries across the world are experiencing spikes. We should have seen the writing in the hall. Jamaicans have to know. The worst thing we can do, the way we guarantee spread is to politicize this disease.
This is why wearing a mask has become a political statement in the US. Politicians must be careful about their responses. Across the political aisle their statements have the potential to make the situation worst.
We need to be united on this. The partisanship puts us all at risk.
