2019/2020 was a resurgent season for Toni Kroos after a horrendous campaign both individually and with Real Madrid in 2018/2019.

Kroos was one of the MVPs of Real Madrid's season with consistent performances in nearly every game.

One of the major issues Real Madrid had in 2018/2019 was Toni Kroos' inconsistent defensive contribution. So instead of increasing Toni's defensive workload, Zidane phased in Fede Valverde into the squad. Fede bought energy and workate into Real Madrid's sluggish midfield.
Real Madrid were also hindered by Casemiro's general lack of positional discipline and inconsistency. Casemiro worked on both and improved nearly every single aspect of his game including his much maligned ability to progress the ball.
In 2018/2019, Real Madrid's press for the large part was erratic and inefficient. Zidane organised the press better in 2018/2019. Real Madrid did not press as often as they did the season before but were now more effective in pressure regains improving by nearly 4%.
The reduced defensive burden meant that Kroos could occupy more advanced areas on the left of the pitch. This allowed him to do what he does best, dictate the game. His passing has always been crisp and efficient. And this season was no less with Kroos completing 94% of them.
Zidane also recognised the dip in goalscoring numbers post Ronaldo. A solution to reduce the deficit was to take more shots from midfield. Kroos' superb shot taking ability meant that he was a constant threat. He also found himself taking shots inside the box more often.
Toni ranked among the best in the league among midfielders for passes into the final third and key passes. Here's a look at how he compares with the rest.
Midifelds work as an unit. Fede's emergence as one of the league's best box to box talents and Casemiro's improvement on his overall game will only help Kroos prolong his time at the top. 2018/2019 seems like an anomaly in what's been an extremely consistent career for Kroos.
