I just finished Atomic Habits by @JamesClear and it's shifting my world view
It's ultimately about who you want to become. Every habit is a vote towards an identity.

Habits give you evidence about who you are. Habits fight imposter syndrome!! If I draw everyday, then I'm an artist.
Habits = freedom 🤯

As a kid I hated habits. I wanted choice.

Actually. Habits allow your brain to automate so you have MORE energy for the things you want to consciously think about.
If I have a habit of painting everyday then. Then I can focus my energy on the actual painting instead of waffling on if I'm going to paint or not.
People think they lack motivation when they actually lack clarity. A.k.a. specificity.

Once I clarified exactly when, where, what I was gonna paint each day. It was much easier to start.

I paint after dinner, at my desk, for 1hr, a theme each month (this month is landscape)
I used to think my environment didn't affect me.

Wrong. Our environments influence our behaviours a lot. We can use them to make good habits obvious.

I leave my sketchbooks and art supplies on the dining room table so they're ready as soon as I'm done dinner.
Surround yourself with the people who have the habits you want.

This has been KEY for me. It normalizes the behaviors and you start to mimic that community.

Finding other artists and seeing them paint everyday inspired me to do so.
Being lazy is NORMAL HUMAN BEHAVIOUR. It's in our genetics to conserve energy.

It all comes down to friction design. Reduce friction for good habits (always carry around a water bottle), increase friction for bad habits (unplug the tv)
"the secret is to always stay below the point where it feels like work"

Ajajxheiahxga I wish someone hammered this into me earlier. My terrible perfectionist devil always wanted to make masterpieces.

Nowadays, I alternate easy and hard depending on how I feel.
It's more important to show up consistently. The 2min rule. Start with what's possible in 2 min. Everyday.
Oh and PLEASURE AND REWARD. That it's normal to seek rewards.

My reward is after I paint. I get to post it on Instagram and browse for a few mins. I get that dopamine hit from likes. But I disable notifications so I don't get so fixated on the likes because I can't control that
Boredom is the greatest threat to mastery.

If bored -> increase difficulty
If overwhelmed -> decrease difficulty
Finally. Diversify your identities. If you cling too tightly to any one, till hinder your growth.
