Gap years are wasted on 18 year olds, we need a gap year for people in their 30s
Gap Years for Grownups shouldn’t be reduced to “maternity leave” or “business school”
Instead of free snacks every employer that wants to look competitive should add a sabbatical policy.
Our society values individualism & entrepreneurialism but our work culture leaves little room for it unless you can manage to do it outside your job. Imagine how many more innovators, artists, creators we would have if we could access that valuable commodity: time.
As early as grade school we are tracked: you’re Smart, or Athletic, or Artistic. Your world gets built up around these early ideas and it keeps you that way. Then you get a job. Our work culture makes it so hard to get off that treadmill and see what else you are.
You’re pressured to devote your whole self to work — and to call it your Passion — but it’s so rare to get a chance to remember why you’re there in the first place. (Besides the desire not to be bankrupted by health care.)
Imagine if you knew when you hit 40 you’d get a paid year off and could do whatever you want — and your job would be waiting for you when you returned.
I would love to announce I’m taking a sabbatical and have my job waiting for me upon my return
