im not excusing it but a reason why there could be this confusion between latin guitar vs the oud is because the time the moors (muslims) had control of spain. there was cultural exchange but that doesn’t change the roots of the oud. https://twitter.com/sinnerforsan/status/1297622027688456192
that’s why there’s traces of the arabs in spain... from music to language and architecture. this happened when the moors were in power, they brought much more than just religion to spain. with science, art, and much more they transformed the country
the alhambra and the mosque of cordoba are just two quick examples. im not sure how much is covered in everyone’s history class, in my case also art history class. for 800 years under that rule, there were so many advancements.
astronomy, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geography and philosophy all flousirshed under their rule. these are all things that are always credited to others, when it had a lot to do with the moors.
this video i watched at a fieldtrip to the 1001 invention exhibit somewhere in LA back in like 2013??? maybe? it’s really good at highlighting how even though most of europe was going through a “dark age” it was the opposite for some
reply quick to add, why mention the dark ages suddenly? the moors controlled spain during the so called “dark ages” this just goes to show that there was more to europe than just death and the plague. that’s just one “side” of history we learn.
as i said earlier the moors ruled spain for many years, in those years they allowed jews and christians to practice freely. it wasn’t until the expulsion of the moors where moors were forced to convert. this is just extra random info
in those years, everyone coexisted and exchange culture. they learned they grew, they adopted. back to the oud.. for it to just be called just a “latin guitar” overlooking the history of it is a little insensitive. so much has been taken and reclaimed as it is.
and this is what the oud sounds like by the way... everyone keeps mentioning the oud but haven’t given an audio example. idk how to explain it but it is distinct? it’s so deep??? i love it
here’s the link to his video if you’re interested and want to hear more! (:
just for fun, to those who didn’t know what the oud was... do you hear the similarity between it and the beginning of thanxx??
tbh idk how this thread happened.. if there’s anything wrong please forgive me it’s my fault for the lack of research this was really just on the spot and in the moment. please correct me if needed. i hope even if it’s just one person, that they learn something new today.
my personal opinion, i don’t mind that they use a oud if properly credited. i think it’s cool, especially since it’s music. this isn’t something to attack the boys for at all, maybe educating about the oud would be cool.
and in the end, that’s my opinion i cannot speak for all arab/ middle eastern atiny. yeah (: i think end thread??? thank you if you read this far im sorry im all over the place @ATEEZofficial ily ♥️
