just watched the “New Oakland” episode of Last Chance U... that show makes me miss home, a home that doesn’t exist anymore for a lot of people.
some of the shots of homeless encampments being destroyed and then they cut to the cop or the former football player who’s made it flipping houses, I watch and get beyond mad, I’m thinking this is tragic. like is this really how we want things to be set up?
I get the directors’ idea to show the “good and the bad” of gentrification, and implying that way you get to enjoy the good is that you have to hustle. But you look at a person like Dior and he’s hustling/ working harder than anybody and he’s sleeping in his car.
At a certain point the justification for inequality becomes so distant from the reality of people’s situation. A lot of these kids are grinding to survive and they say, “if I don’t make it I feel like a failure,” and it’s like, no! The system is set up for you to fail!
Anyways will probably delete this thread but in my feelings about Oakland and Last Chance U and how I want people to have what they need to live with dignity and hope
