How warped does one's worldview have to be or, alternatively, how mendacious does one have to be to use their farewell speech as leader of the @CPC_HQ to claim that the current federal government is even remotely similar to East Berlin in 1989 or current-day Venezuela? https://twitter.com/CBCPolitics/status/1297729626043830272
Has this current government been embroiled in several ethics scandals? Yes. Has it disappointed voters by repeatedly scrapping key electoral promises? Yes. However, to insinuate that the current federal government is far left - let alone leftist - betrays the most basic of facts.
It purchased the TMX Pipeline in addition to enthusiastically supporting the KeyStone XL Pipeline in its 2015 platform. It has been played a key role in negotiating/finalising several free trade agreements - CETA, USMCA, TPP and the CPTPP.
On matters of foreign policy, the Trudeau government has been no friend to 'leftist' authoritarian governments such as Maduro's Venezuela or Nicaragua's Ortega.
Alas, my point is not to normatively position myself on Trudeau's policy stances. That is beyond the objective of this thread. Some of his government's policies have merits. Others deserve a lively discussion while some are questionable.
I limit myself here to pointing out through the provision of basic examples the lunacy of ideological comparisons of this federal government to leftist authoritarian governments made by outgoing Tory leader @AndrewScheer during his farewell speech. FIN.
