I& #39;m thinking about the challenge for AKL, as a city/region, of operating in and out of L3 for the next few years. How do we effectively operate libraries, water systems, housing (dealing w homelessness, new builds, WOF, retro fitting and more), park networks, transport? 1/
Some of our normal income streams will be unavailable, hard hit, by both level changes and the loss of international tourism, so how do we replace that? More green jobs is an obv step forward, but how to pay for that work, opex, capex? 2/
So not just what do we support but what do we shift away from - what do we de-prioritise and how can we make sure that doesn& #39;t reduce money in the local economy, but instead uses local multiplier effect to full advantage https://www.nefconsulting.com/our-services/evaluation-impact-assessment/local-multiplier-3/">https://www.nefconsulting.com/our-servi... 3/
What do library services look like in L3, how can we rejig how they work now so that we don& #39;t have to shut it down entirely? Eg setting up click and collect, even delivery. What about rec centres? Can we run more, smaller classes or is that just impractical? 4/
The big challenge of consultation in a time of lockdowns and physical distancing, mask wearing. How do we engage meaningfully if we can& #39;t do it face to face, especially with communities where chatting over kai and cultural performances is the best way we& #39;ve found? 5/
Going straight to digital exacerbates the digital divide (which is big in my community despite best efforts of local low decile schools through Ako Hiko cluster). It& #39;s not just about devices, it& #39;s about fibre, paying for data, having individual access, translation 6/
What will local govt elections look like in L2, L3, even L4? It& #39;s likely there will be some by-elections after the general election in mid October, so this is a concern sooner rather than later actually. Chance here to mix it up to improve turn out! 7/
How do we make sure every public toilet that is open is safe in different levels? Currently we close heaps of toilets in L3 and L4, partly because of discouraging ppl to be out & about, but creates problems for tradies, walkers, bus drivers etc. Can we open more safely? 8/
What about incentivising/enabling local resource production on a truly local level, eg neighbourhood - ht @kellydanc for pointing out food, I& #39;m thinking about electricity too, local grids. Water too! 9/
(I should point out that I& #39;m adding to this thread periodically, not all at once!)
Our urban parks have a lot of land for close contact sports fields, do we look at how to mark those up, do bubble bookings, for lockdown times? How does Council support sports clubs scheduling round robins over a season of uncertainty? 10/
Is there a way to make playgrounds safe in L3? Are there surface materials we could use that are resistant to viruses? Could we make those bookable for bubbles too? 11/
Thinking about retail and town centres - is the future for chains more about online (eg Lush who are struggling to keep stores open)? Do our town centres then become more about services, hospo, small owner operated niche shops (eg indie bookshops)? 12/
Back to parks for a sec @mayo_rob made the point about how park lighting for paths can mean people can space out in time as well as physical distance, giving more capacity for exercise, as well as making these work as nighttime transport links... 13/
... and in turn more people in our parks at night, say until 10pm lights off for eg, will expand how long women & others who are afraid out at night can use those facilities, feel safer in their neighbourhoods. 14/
What will arts facilities look like when visitor numbers (through the door) can no longer be a KPI? What does visiting look like for different types of art? Sure you can look at some things on a screen but some need to be experienced, touched, smelled. Public art becomes...
... even more important in a world where galleries may need to be less accessible some of the time, and international travel changes radically. What do artist residencies look like? Is there a way to somehow change an artist& #39;s environment without moving them from home? 16/
