[Short thread] I’ve been my church’s video guy for 7 years. Ever since we started meeting in hotel conference centers; I’d bring a camcorder, then 2. I’ve had a lot of fun developing my video editing skills.
As we’ve moved around, the church has always been good about getting equipment for me to use to further the video ministry. We’ve talked about livestreaming for a few years, but never gave it serious thought, until this virus came along.
All of the sudden, I needed to figure out how to get a good live stream going without a huge budget. Just in time, Blackmagic Design came out with the perfect device for our needs. A great mix of cost-consciousness & functionality.
I ordered the ATEM Mini Pro in early June, while we were beginning to transition from Zoom church back to in-person church. It was so new, it took 6 weeks to arrive after being on backorder.
Even after getting it, I’ve been patiently trying to get things figured out to shoehorn it into a system built for SD video in a building we rent from a Messianic congregation.
This morning was the first Sunday that I’ve been able to actually put it to use. As a techy guy who loves to play with new gadgets & a video guy turning to a new chapter in my production experience, it was fun!
In the end, I was able to stream a sermon that turned out almost as goid as a post-production edited version I’ve been doing for years.
The cool thing about the ATEM Mini Pro is that you can connect a USB hard drive & record what you’re streaming. I ended up bringing that into the editor to do some minor stuff I just can’t do live. It took me about 10 minutes to edit the permanent version.
I’d grade today’s experience an A-. It went really well, but there is certainly room for improvement. My goal now is to get some bugs worked out, & get everything simplified so others can fill in when I’m away, without needing a thick manual to figure it out.
My friend @agbasher has been sitting in with me for several weeks wanting to learn it too. We’re getting there!
