A thread about who Tame Impala is and getting into his music as requested
Tame Impala is the psychedelic music project of Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker. He writes, sings and produces all of his music. However, he tours as a band- the members of this band form an Australian rock band called Pond.
Album 1: Innerspeaker (2010) Tame Impala’s debut album brings back 60s psychedelic rock. It’s very guitar heavy and “rough” sounding. Themes of his inner conflict and isolation run through this album, you gain insight to an introverted mind.
Songs I recommend: Alter ego, It is not meant to be and Runway houses city clouds
Album 2: Lonerism (2012)
His most critically acclaimed album and my favourite, lonerism is still psychedelic rock/ neo psychedelia but it is more synth heavy. It perfectly merges synth and rock tones, giving very colourful production and a more psychedelic yet more pop sound
He still explores his social anxiety in Lonerism, touring made him realise he found its very difficult to speak with people, and that he truly was a loner. I would suggest starting from the beginning, or you can listen to the famous singles Elephant/ FLWOGB as tasters
Album 3: Currents (2015)
His most famous album. The rock sound is ditched for a more synth pop sound. It is still psychedelic af, just in a different way. The album mainly explores a failed relationship and Kevin’s experience getting over it. Plenty of famous singles to listen to
-such as Let it happen (my favourite from this album), The less I know the better, which also became tik tok famous this year and New person same old mistakes which was covered by Rihanna on Anti
Album 4: The Slow Rush (2020)
This album still has the elements of synth pop from Currents but Tame Impala brings disco and house vibes to this album. It contains a lot of drums. This album explores the theme of time and Kevin growing up, getting married etc.
Each track is said to represent a month, 12 tracks meaning TSR is one year. To get a taster listen to Borderline (original on yt) and It might be time. You should listen in order for all his albums tbh. Each of his albums also have b sides.
Behind the scenes Tame Impala has worked with a lot of hip hop and some pop artists. ASAP Rocky sampled his song “Why won’t you make up your mind” in Sundress, and Tame Impala helped produce Skeletons by Travis Scott and Repeat after me by the Weeknd.
With pop, he helped produce Lady Gaga’s Perfect Illusion. As mentioned, Rihanna did a New person same old mistakes cover in ANTI. There is also a rumoured Tame Impala and SZA collab, the demo of which has been posted on YouTube.
Stream his songs please, they are good. End of thread.
