Many sheltered LDS people associate discomfort with evil/danger. The two do not always equate. We feel discomfort when something is wrong, yes, but we should take time to find out what exactly is wrong instead of assuming it's not us

The KFBYU thing is a perfect example of this.
It is clear to me that the people participating feel discomfort, and I genuinely can empathize with that. Learning that things aren't as perfect or clean or familiar as you expect can be scary. But the sheer privilege of dismissing is as "it's not me, it's them!" is infuriating.
We can't just run from discomfort whenever we come face to face with it, and we can't demonize the situations that create it either. Discomfort is the fire by which we are refined. We cannot learn, grow, or improve ourselves without facing discomfort.
If you run from discomfort, you are running from opportunities to become more Christlike. You are running from lessons God might be trying to teach you.

Don't run. Listen, think, and have an *open* heart and a contrite spirit and take the opportunity to become better.
