So I saw Superman Man of Tomorrow and I have opinions... like it's pretty good all said and done but it's very much a Superman year one film. It's acts as a nice introduction to the character and I feel like instead of me just telling you hey it's good what comics does this use?
Well let's get this out of the way first written by PROBABLE sex pest Max Landis American Alien is in the DNA of this film honesty harder than I thought. Honestly ALIEN get's said so much in this film that I imagine that was the title at some point.
Now it's not a 1-1 adaption like the DKR animated films it's more like the Death of Superman films where it's uses some of the framework and events. Still there is some interesting references to DC lore and characters.
For one I'm going to say this Jonn fans he does get treated well and there is some play, it's plays with Jonn being on earth for Decades and acting as a secret protector to Clark if you want to read that these book right here play with that element.
Luthor himself in the movie I feel draws on the Azzarello Luthor story. He also the modern green eyes that you see on some version of Luthor. Little references to Krytonite don't you know. Some of his quotes feel based on that Luthor story.
Lobo get's more play in the movie than I expected being part of several KEY SCENES. The highlight for me was when Lois tried to interview him. This is also on of those adaptions where you can feel they were going to the classic Giffen Lobo.
Parasite story in this is an expanded version of the one we saw in the American Alien comics adding in Max's very unique horror take on the character, but honestly Grant's take probably inspired this one.
Anyway those were the comics in play let's talk about what it does. One thing American Alien did kind of right was be a more consistent Man of Steel. I do like the comic but if you hate Max style and some of his ideas I understand. But it is the DNA of the film.
Now it doesn't share all that much but enough. Pa Kent has a little harder edge but not the stupid edge he got in Man of Steel he tells Clark he has two choices and neither is wrong, stronger a little more distant but you can tell he really cares.
This movie also uses the John Byrne Man of Steel Take, which if you don't know Superman doesn't figure out about Kypton till he is an adult. While he knows he's an alien or suspects it playing into his angst he doesn't even know till LOBO of all people tells him.
Lois is a bit supporting character in this, and she is cute. Look I'm a dude and this Lois hits all my buttons. Anyway there is no romance subplot in this film the focus in on Clark and his issues though Lois does help him in the film. She is of course he usual go get the story.
I'm trying to not spoil the film here but here are my criticisms
*I feel like Superman should have solo while I like Jonn I feel like Clark's big moment were taken sometimes
*There is a little Batman dick sucking only a little
*One scene just ends up funny you will know.
Now with that said I like this film a lot and it's a good introduction to what is Superman is as a character. The Speech as the end will either be used to show how great he is or forgotten by the fandom. I also LOVE THE ARTSTYLE and want sequels in this style.
So to me at the end of the day, this is an 8/10 DC animated movie, one of the better origin pieces. If this was a new Universe starting from the ground up, I would be into it. Everyone is on point with there best versions and I want to see more. Which is what I want.
