The word plagiarism comes from the Latin word "plagium," to kidnap.

Plagiarism is not the same as copyright violation.

Copyright violation is copying word for word (which IS against the law)

but plagiarism is taking someone else's ideas and passing them off as your own

Consider plagiarism to be a less illegal cousin to copyright violation.

Plagiarism isn't against the law but it is unethical and dishonest.

Usually, plagiarism applies in academic and journalistic arenas.

For example,

1) if you create a long thread on fly-fishing w/ unique ideas

2)someone else then sees it and creates a thread on fly fishing in their own words &

3) they don't acknowledge you as a source

This is plagiarism.

Cite your influences if you are going to closely model their ideas to avoid plagiarism.

I hope you enjoyed this thread on plagiarism.

Threads on trademark and the fair use exception to the Copyright Act are forthcoming & add to my existing thread on copyright.
