Louise as Thymian and the “fallen” girls at the correctional home exercise to the drumbeat and watchful (and lustful) eye of their matron (Valeska Gert) in “Diary of a Lost Girl Girl.” The scene’s bizarre “orgasmic” ending proved too controversial for censors in 1929. (Thread)
Side Note: Valeska Gert was a famously controversial German Cabaret dancer, pantomime performer and artist in the “fringe” bohemian Berlin art communities in the 1920’s. She is now considered an early pioneer who influenced the German (and U.S.) punk scene in the late 1970’s.
Director G.W. Pabst first utilized Valeska for an uncredited role in his groundbreaking film “Die freudlose Gasse” or “The Joyless Street” in 1925, pictured (L) with the film’s new star Greta Garbo. She later had a role in Pabst’s “Three Penny Opera” (1931). A photo from 1931 (R)
And here’s Valeska dancing in an interesting video that features brief flashes of Louise in “Pandora’s Box” (1929).
