When you're a name & you make an indie, you get financing. As your indies sell less tickets & don't make a profit, your name no longer gets financing. No financing, film can't be made. Get a bigger profile again with bigger movies but made with directors you still admire on films
you are interested in, it garners more attention & you are back being able to get financing for your indies with your name. It's pretty simple really. That's all he was saying. Has nothing to do with lack of humility at all.
It's a smart man not only knowing how things work artistically, but business-wise in the career he has chosen to devote his life to. No one should ever question his devotion to indies. His whole life has revolved around either watching them or being in them.
