i was having a convo abt the "some fic writers are here for the Wrong Reasons" discourse i see a lot among army, so here's some vague thoughts, bc what's interesting to me is that ppl don't seem to care whether rpf is ethical, it's whether the practices BEHIND it are ethical?
i've been in rpf fandoms but i've NEVER encountered this particular take that seems so prevalent w army, i.e. ppl have NO problem reading rpf BUT they see the most BASIC transformative fandom practices that make that fic possible as suspect at best and exploitative at worst?
there's this idea that fic writers are In It For the Wrong Reasons, bc how dare they view bts as characters or make assumptions about them when they don't know them?! but it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to write fic w/o making assumptions about bts or treating them as characters!
the bts in fic are NOT the bts irl, nor should they be! it'd be fucking creepy for ppl to write abt bts and be like "this is who they are, this is not fiction it is a True Account!" and when authors tweet headcanons abt them etc, they're talking abt the FICTIONAL versions!
(and before you come at me like "but [x] DEFINITELY thinks they're like this irl," uh, how do you know that? did they literally say exactly that? it's called fanFICTION bc it's FICTION so to assume someone writing it doesn't think it's fiction requires pretty substantial proof.)
to me, it seems most ppl are fine w fic existing, but what they're NOT fine w is authors being Too Loud abt the kind of headcanoning they do in order to make that fic exist. it feels close to a respectability thing? do the thing but don't be too loud abt the thing, ok ami? uwu!
OR, u can write fic but ONLY if u have a list of your other Valuable Contributions as a fan to Prove you support them like a Morally Upright Consumer, when UH, fic draws ppl into the fandom? fic brings in new fans and keeps existing fans interested! writing fic IS support of bts?
fic is valuable to the fandom and to bts, it's just not valuable in a way that is directly monetizable by bighit (tho they're def trying to change that with their games lol), and imo THAT is part of ppl's problem w it in a fandom that is SO focused on monetary goals and numbers.
i know most of this is the same stuff i said here
, but i'm trying to figure out more of the values that might underpin these views. so this was mostly speculation, just stuff i've been considering re: Why army has this particular unique problem w fic! https://twitter.com/clarz/status/1250828284545335298
