Why Lady Gaga is the queen of the VMAS (a thread):
Starting with the 2009 VMAS, Gaga received the most nominations that night (9) including best new artist, video of the year, best female video, best pop video, best art direction, cinematography, special effects, editing and direction. Going to win 3 of them.
Her iconic outfits also turned heads that year including her red carpet arrival with Kermit the frog, the red Alexander Mcqueen outfit, the philip tracy bird nest and the press conference outfit by Jean Paul Gautier.
Nothing that year was more iconic than her performance of “Paparazzi” which showcased what fame can do to a celebrity, similar to what happened to Marilyn Monroe. This would also mark the end of The Fame era and transition into The Fame Monster.
The next Year at the 2010 VMAS Gaga was the most nominated artist that year (13), for a second year in a row. The nominations included, best collaboration, female video, pop video, dance video, video of the year, art direction, choreography, cinematography, direction, editing,SFX
She received the most nominations ever in a single VMA year, and was the first female artist ever nominated for two different videos in the Video of the Year category for. She would win 8 awards that night, making her the most awarded female VMA artist in a single night.
Gaga was on top of the fashion game that year as well wearing a beautiful Mcqueen outfit and armadillo heels and a black Armani Privé dress with Noritaka Tatehana Shoes under.
At the 2010 VMAS Gaga also wore the one of the most iconic dresses in history, pop culture and fashion history, causing huge controversy, confusion and headlines worldwide . The meat dress. The dress is now conserved at the rock and roll hall of fame museum.
At the 2011 VMAS Gaga received 4 nominations winning 2 of them. The nominations included Female Video, Video with a message, Choreography and art direction.
That Year Gaga showed up in drag as her male alter ego from the You and I music video, Jo Calderone.
Later on that night “Jo Calderone” would perform You and I with Queen’s very own Brian May.
After her hip injury she was on a hiatus an didn’t attend the 2012 VMAS but then would attend the 2013 VMAS, with nominations, to open the show with Applause, delivering one of the best performances of her career and an homage to herself.
Unfortunately Gaga would be majorly snubbed and not receive any nominations or attend any VMAS from 2014 onwards, until 2019 where she got 2 nominations. 2020 marks the third year in which Gaga is the most nominated artist of the night with 9 awards.
In conclusion, we can agree that Lady Gaga established herself to be one of the best VMA artists of all time, leaving her stamp on pop culture and music history with every appearance as well as breaking nomination records as well as for awards won.
