With the new Batman teaser yesterday, I'm seeing a lot of the same old anti-Batman talking points cropping up, and this is a matter i have Opinions about, so im gonna ramble for a bit.

Feel free to mute this thread, I won't be offended. Here we go.

WHY BATMAN DOESN'T SUCK: (1/)
"Every Batman movie is the same"

This just isn't true. The Snyder films depict Batman as a gun-toting fascist with some type of personality disorder; quite different from the Nolan films which depict him as a socially-awkward loner who never learned what a stage voice is. (2/)
These are different still from the Burton movies, which were at best Batman adjacent in terms of their respect for the source material; and the Schumacher films, which were basically neon adaptations of the Adam West show.
"Batman should spend his money on charity rather than gadgets"

Most depictions of Batman show him using a huge chunk of his fortune on various charities, orphanages, and social programs. He just also does the bat thing that gets all the headlines. (3/)
"Batman beating up poor people is shitty"

Hell yeah it is! The weakest Batman stories are the ones where he beats up on nameless thugs because you're right, that level of crime is usually driven by poverty. If I was in charge of the Batman brand, we'd rarely see that. (4/)
The best Batman stories are the ones where he combats dudes dressed like clowns and penguins and other colorful baddies, or the ones where he takes down crooked cops and politicians. Socially conscious Batman is best Batman. (5/)
"Too much Frank Miller"

HARD AGREE.

The films have, for better or worse, adapted Miller's best Batman stories, so it's time to move on to other stuff. For me I'd love to see the films move onto the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale stories, especially THE LONG HALLOWEEN. (6/)
"Another white dude superhero YAWN"

I don't think Bruce Wayne particularly needs to be white, and I wouldn't care if WB decided to go with a BIPOC Batman.

It DOES look like Geoffrey Wright is playing Commissioner Gordon in the new one, and that's pretty dope. (7/)
If you're tired of Bruce Wayne though, you should be checking out some of the Batman-related things WB has been doing lately.

The Harley Quinn cartoon on HBO Max is hilarious and insanely well-done, and is centered on her relationship and budding romance with Poison Ivy. (8/)
I haven't watched the new Batwoman show, but Ruby Rose plays the first genderfluid LGBTQIA+ superhero lead. In Season 2 the role is being taken over by Jacivia Leslie. I understand the show's had a rocky go of it, but they're at least *trying* for representation. (9/)
My point is, the Batman films have nearly 100 years of source material to draw from, which features A LOT of really great stories. If you approach them with a closed mind, yeah, it's not gonna do anything for you. But WB is showing there's something here for everyone. (10/10)
FRICK I forgot to mention Birds of Prey was absolutely great even though nobody saw it
