How many of you have ever set a goal that you didn’t reach?

A New Years resolution that you didn’t stick with? Even 24 hrs😂

“going to quit drinking right after I finish this 6 pack.”

“going to lose weight right after I eat these brownies.”

A mentor changed all that 4 me👇🧵
When most people talk about success they talk about maximum effort but today let’s talk about minimum.

He called it a Minimum Standard of Performance or MSP

First of all, we have to lay some framework for this concept.
Rule 1 -is to identify the top 1-3 activities and only measure those.

Let’s talk about what we will measure. Most make the mistake of making the result the goal.

If you are a real estate agent you might say this month I will get four listings.
While that may be a great goal it wouldn’t be ideal to measure your success by how many listings you get.

Why you might ask? Because you have very little control over who says yes and no and what time frame they may make their decision. (Sorry to all you closers)
The only thing you really have control over is your attitude and activity. You need to measure only the critical few activities that lead you to a signed contract for a listing.
Rule 2 - Utilize a week as your timeframe

Next let’s talk about time. People really struggle with the concept of time as a measuring tool.

“I’m going to lose 25 lbs this month.”

“I’m going to send 100 dms or emails to prospects a day.”
Both of these are extreme ends of the spectrum in regard to time.

A month is too long, it doesn’t frustrate or motivate you enough and you can be off track before you know it.

A day is too short, anyone can have a good day or bad day. It doesn’t accurately tell you much.
The best option is to work in a weekly context. When you think about it we are already conditioned that way through the “work week.”
Rule 3- Never make your minimum your maximum

This was for me the hardest part. I’m sure you have heard the expression “all out massive action” and this at times is needed but be certain it’s only for short bursts to break out of plateaus.
MSP is all about consistency and compounding efforts over a long period of time. It’s about asking yourself what is the bare minimum that I’m willing to accept from myself on a weekly basis?
Rule 4 - You have to punish or reward yourself for each activity

As much as I enjoy working, I personally prefer fucking around and having fun. I’d much rather play some golf, watch some movies with my daughters or check out a new winery or brewery with my wife.
One of my MSP’s is to have 5 meetings with prospective clients every week.

Reward - if I accomplish by end of Thursday then I get to take Friday off.

Punishment- if I don’t achieve it by end of Friday then I have to work a Saturday.
To summarize, and continue the earlier examples, let’s say I’m an overweight real estate agent and I have two major goals I want to accomplish.

Personally I want to lose 30 lbs and be at my ideal weight.
Professionally I want to sell $5 million in homes over the next 12 months.
Remember to never make your minimum your maximum. Nobody said I can’t eat clean for six days or hold two open houses in one week. It shouldn’t strain you too much or you will constantly be beating yourself up. Be disciplined in both the reward and the punishment.
