A necessary next step in medicine is to start looking at variables & biomarkers as continuous variables, not categorical or binomial. Seems self-evident but needs to be emphasized. How did we get here? The size of the pocket of the white coat holds the answer!

In the old days that is the space you had to carry knowledge cues- 3x5 cards or the spiral bound Washington manual. Those fortunate with good memory didn’t have to pull it out as much. Still much easier to remember a cut off point. Right? @davidcnorrismd

But today we have a wealth of knowledge at our finger tips. The Washington manual can’t hope to compete with an iPhone. And as we move, more and more, to big data, AI, etc we need to catch up with the times. No one should be forced to memorize cut off points.

Lastly I will not go into all possibilities, but creating categories is dangerous. We have seen it with #COVID19. We have the Simpson paradox. It’s just not good. We must move on.
