Back in 1994, England toured Australia for 5 match Ashes series.

Series opener was played at Gabba in Nov and this is Glen McGrath's first test match against England.

He ended up with booking figures of 29-6-101-0

Yes, wicketless !!

P.s: Mike Atherton played that match.
After Gabba test, McGrath was dropped for Boxing day test at MCG and 2 other tests at Sydney and Adelaide Oval.

He was brought back into playing eleven for final test at WACA in Feb'95
Prior to this test match at WACA, Mike Atherton averaged 39.3 against Australia with 11 half centuries and 1 Century.

He was in great form in that series with an average of ~50 with 3 half centuries.
Prior to WACA test, McGrath played just 8 test matches and got19 wickets under his belt.

No one would have expected that the Perth test match will lead to something extraordinary in coming years.
McGrath wasted no time at WACA and ended up with 6 wickets.

Guess his first wicket against England?

it is MIKE ATHERTON

Mike Atherton - C : Healy , B : McGrath
From that test, McGrath and Atherton faced each other in 17 tests.

Atherton averaged 9.89 against McGrath in these 17 tests and got out for 19 times.

Staggering!
Mike Atherton vs Australia

Pre vs Post McGrath Era.
All McGrath need to do was bowl over the wicket.

That immaculate off stump line coupled with steep bounce created ample problems for Atherton.

Atherton - caught by Healy and bowled by McGrath turned out to be a regular feature.
on 27th Aug'01, Mike Atherton played his final test at Oval.

He nicked one to first slip at Shane Warne and got out to McGrath for one last time.
Atherton vs McGrath

578 balls - 188 runs - 9.89 Avg - 19 dismissals

10 times caught behind by Keeper
6 times caught in slip cordon
2 times caught at fine leg
1 LBW

Atherton was also McGrath's 150th wicket.
