The cinematography was great. The Black people were beautiful. Soundtrack was fire. But this is hands down one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. https://twitter.com/noahharald/status/1297413851487457280
Lemme get me something to drink rq and then I’ll be back with my notes.
Ok so before I get started, I just wanna say that this is MY Black ass opinion. You do not have to agree with me. I don’t give a damn. But If you get to poppin off in my mentions, imma block you 🥰
Aight so boom. Again, I thought the movie was beautiful. I loved the lead actors, and I was jamming the entire time. But the movie romanticized tf out of police brutality. Let’s start from the beginning. The movie is about a black female lawyer on a date with a
with a Black man that works at Costco. Now this isn’t shade to anyone’s job or profession, but it highlights the fact that these two would never be on a date, which in turn makes the female lead look desperate. It is clear that she is uninterested in this man
These two have nothing in common but grow to “love” each other, not because they enjoy each others company, but because they’re about to die.
I, like everyone else, hated the placement of the sex scene while the child was being murdered by police officers. I understand that they were trying to connect two passionate moments, but I just felt like the placement wasn’t necessary.
I also wanna remind y’all that this story is fictional. Which means that they lows didn’t have to die. But when Lena Waithe was asked why they died, she connected their stories to real folx that have died by way of racism and police brutality which IMO is fucking gross.
I also didn’t care for the role they gave Indya Moore. Reducing their character down to a compliant concubine of this drug dealer was mid. The way women were repped in this movie was mid, because even tho women were more assertive and confident, they still were
had to follow the orders and expectations of men. The male lead was cowardly asf, but his weak ass opinion was often embraced more than the female lead’s. Didn’t care for that.
Finally, the story just didn’t make sense... like I understood why they ran from the police and Lena described it as “choosing freedom”, but they weren’t free at all. They were in an emotional and mental prison while running from the police. I can understand seeing
this as a better outcome than being sent to prison, but this was not freedom. It was torture. I also thought it was interesting that picked two dark skinned lead roles. I think themes of colorism were prevelant throughout the film. It made me think about why those
two were set to represent all of this pain and trauma.
Feel free to chime in with your notes. Y’all can disagree with me lol. It’s when y’all get to being disrespectful that we wind up with a problem.
